David Gauntlett
"The media" in the past, was like some people sitting around a radio set looking at the radio times wondering what's going to be on and when or some people queueing up from 8 o'clock for a movie at a cinema. Time was important in the past as schedules would be set by the media which media consumers would have to respond to and shape their life's around. Also, psychologically, the media has a dominant role. There wasn't much choice as to how and when to get their media as it was dictated by the media institutions. You also needed big recording devices in the past to record and you needed a big broadcasting company to distribute your recordings, which cost a lot. Nowadays, we can produce and share media using small media devices such as laptops or mobile phones and put them up on sites such as youtube.
